Jorge Ramos makes digital journalism history. “I’m just one example that there is life after television”, said former Univision anchor while accepting an Emmy for “Jorge Ramos: Así Veo las Cosas“, during the 47th annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards in New York. His independent digital show “Así Veo las Cosas” won Outstanding News Program in Spanish.
His new Emmy win isn’t just another trophy for the mantle – it’s a mic drop moment that signals an amazing shift in his legendary journalistic career. After walking away from TelevisaUnivision in December 2024, Ramos bet big on himself, diving headfirst into the crazy world of independent, digital-first journalism with his scrappy startup, Tres Alebrijes LLC.
SPOILER ALERT! The gamble paid off.
Jorge Ramos’s sends an important message after wining
After coming back from the Emmys, Ramos sent a strong message to his followers: “This [award] marks one of the first times the Emmys have presented an award like this to a team working on YouTube and in the digital sphere. As such, I view this as an affirmation of the work we set out to do when we launched the program less than a year ago. We started with two core ideas. First, that people were moving away from traditional television and migrating toward digital media—and we bet on the premise that you would prefer to receive your news on your phone rather than through any other medium. Second, there is the matter of credibility—a question not merely of technology, but of trust. We are convinced that you—that I, that people in general—follow other people, not institutions; and that true credibility lies precisely in this kind of independent journalism. So, this Emmy is ours; we embrace it, and we cherish it. But ultimately, this Emmy belongs to you.”
Ramos wasn’t shy about those Emmy nods
A few days before the ceremony, Ramos wasn’t shy about what those Emmy nods meant to him. He called them his “proof of concept” – basically, receipts that independent journalism can hang with the big dogs. “Many people were saying it is impossible to compete with the big networks, but we are showing that we can”, Ramos told YouTube’s official block back in April, probably with a knowing smile. “These two Emmy nominations are very important because they prove that journalism can exist and have an impact anywhere.” In other words, you don’t need a corner office and a corporate cafeteria to make waves.
Ramos makes history
When Ramos took the stage to receive his award, he doubled down on his digital revolution, boldly declaring YouTube “the future of the news”. “I think this is a strong message. It’s like the big bang of independent journalism. For us is a validation. It’s proof that there’s a new space for independent journalism and we can actually compete and even win against big media corporations,” said Ramos on stage at the Emmys. He also gave a shout-out to his “young team” at Tres Alebrijes -because apparently, you can teach an old dog new tricks, especially when the dog is a journalism icon reinventing the game.
In March 2026 alone, the program garnered 101 million views across YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. Furthermore, its main YouTube channel recorded 4.85 million unique monthly users—figures that reflect the reach of an information model built directly upon digital platforms.
