Hayden Panettiere has died at the age of 36, according to reports confirmed by her family. “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” said her father, Alan Panettiere, in a statement shared with People. “She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen,” he added.

As of now, officials have not released an official cause of death, and the investigation remains ongoing. We will update when we get confirmation.

The actress, best known for her roles in Heroes and Nashville, was found unresponsive at a South Carolina apartment complex on August 16, 2026, sources said. Police officers and EMS personnel responded to a report of an “unresponsive female” in Greenville, around 1:50 p.m. local time on Sunday, Aug. 16, according to information previously confirmed to People magazine by the Greenville Police Department. The woman was later identified as Panettiere.

TMZ reported, citing law enforcements sources, that authorities were alerted to the medical emergency by a 911 call from a friend of the actress. The caller’s identity has not been made public.

Panettiere was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m.

According to the outlet, first responders attempted to resuscitate Panettiere using advanced cardiac life support. In addition to CPR, the effort reportedly included medication, breathing tubes and heart rhythm monitoring. Panettiere was reportedly pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m., as chest compressions administered by paramedics were also unable to revive her.

According to dispatch audio obtained by People, officials were heard discussing an “overdose” and “cardiac arrest” around the time of Panettiere’s death.

Panettiere died five days before her 37th birthday.

Panettiere’s younger brother died in 2023

It’s important not to confuse this with the 2023 death of her brother, Jansen Panettiere, whose cause of death was previously linked to heart-related complications. He was 28 when he died from a aortic valve complications from enlarged heart syndrome.

In her memoir, she spoke about how doctor told her that her liver was going to give up and “she’ll died in 5 years.” Panettiere said her addiction began in her teens, when someone on her team gave her “happy pills” before red carpets to keep her energized for interviews.

Her drinking later escalated after she moved to Tennesse in 2012 to star in Nashville, and she said it worsened after the birth of her daughter, Kaya, in 2014. She also developed a dependency on opioids after an old neck injury flared up.

Panettiere entered rehab in 2015, later relapsed, ans said alcohol became a way to cope with anxiety, public pressure and sleep deprivation. By 2019, she said her health had deteriorated, with jaundice, swelling and thinning hair.

Panettiere’s death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans and peers across social media, with many remembering her career in television and film, as well as her long public presence in entertainment.

Panettiere became a mother in December 2014, when she and her then-fiancé, Wladimir Klitschko, welcomed their daughter, Kaya Evdokia Klitschko.

The former couple co-parented Kaya, now 11, for the first four years. In 2018, Panettiere transferred full custody to Klitschko.
