Did the largest active California Wildfire started by a shipwrecked mariner?

California’s largest wildfire of the year may have been started by a stranded sailor. It is reported that he launched distress flares after being shipwrecked on an island near Santa Barbara. This reportedly sparked California’s largest active wildfire—which began on Friday and has scorched 16,600 acres—prompting authorities to close the island, located within Channel Islands National Park, to the public for the remainder of the week. Visitors holding camping reservations at the Water Canyon campground were notified via email.

Petty Officer Kenneth Wiese stated that the U.S. Coast Guard received a report indicating that a vessel had broken apart after running aground on the island Friday morning. The mariner fired flares to attract the attention of other vessels in the vicinity, Wiese added.

A Coast Guard boat rescued the 67-year-old man, who was subsequently airlifted to Camarillo Airport. The man sustained no injuries during the incident. “We are very grateful that he is safe,” Wiese remarked.

The Santa Rosa Fire was reported around 5 a.m Friday

The Santa Rosa Fire was first reported by an aircraft flying over the island around 5 a.m. Friday, according to U.S. Wildland Fire Service officials. That time is several hours before the Coast Guard was informed of the shipwreck, but it was unclear exactly what time the vessel crashed ashore. By Tuesday the wildfire had burned 16,600 acres, according to federal officials. “Smoke from the Sandy Fire is expected to impact much of western Los Angeles County including Calabasas, Santa Monica, and Los Angeles City,” the South Coast Air Quality Management District said in its forecast.

Unhealthy Air Quality

The agency said smoke could reach unhealthy air quality index levels at times between Calabasas, Pacific Palisades and Malibu. Areas between Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and East Los Angeles could reach “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” conditions or higher, according to AQMD.

“Smoke from the Sandy Fire is expected to impact much of western Los Angeles County including Calabasas, Santa Monica, and Los Angeles City,” the agency said in its forecast, reported The Los Angeles Daily News.
