Nancy Guthrie Missing Case: Volunteers Recover Backpack

Volunteers found backpack during search for Nancy Guthrie

The quest to find the missing 84-year-old mother of “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie has now reached its 22nd day. On Nancy Guthrie’s street in the Catalina Foothills, a small group of reporters, true crime enthusiasts, and volunteer searchers gathered under the relentless afternoon sun.

During an informal search-and-rescue a backpack and other items were found near Nancy Guthrie’s home on Feb. 22. The backpack was handed over the deputies. “Volunteers searchers are canvassing the neighborhood around Nancy Guthrie’s house”, posted Brian Entin, Senior National Correspondent from NewsNation, on X. “They found a backpack that does not match the one in the surveillance video – but deputies came and picked it up. One searcher got emotional saying her mom is around Nancy’s age”.

According to AZ Central, nearly three weeks after Nancy vanished, about a dozen people met in a Hobby Lobby parking lot and set out with maps, determined to search the surrounding area.

The informal search-and-rescue came despite a public warning from Pima County Sheriff’s Department. The department posted a message on social media: “We appreciate their concern, and we all want to find Nancy, but this work is best left to professionals. PCSD has volunteer opportunities if they wish to get involved with the department…Private property laws apply, and it is up to each individual property owner to grant permission for someone to search their property.”

Gloves

The latest development follows an earlier discovery by an Arizona couple who found a pair of black gloves in the desert about a mile from Guthrie’s home. The couple -who asked to remain anonymous- said that they did not touch the gloves because they did not want to disturb possible evidence. Instead, they took photos and contacted authorities. The couple said: “It appeared to have looked like it was ripped. It also appeared to look like it had blood on it. There was two different colors. The blood was more towards the wrist side of the glove and on the pointer finger, it looked like it was ripped.”

Masked Intruder

The masked, armed intruder seen in Nancy Guthrie’s doorbell camera may not have been working alone, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department confirmed on Friday. “The sheriff has said all along that while investigators are working to identify the person seen on doorbell video, they are not ruling out that that was the only person involved,” a Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

Nancy Guthrie has not been seen since January 31. Authorities believe she may have been taken from her home overnight.
