Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are confirmed to bring back The Mummy

The Mummy

They’ve just confirmed the return of one of my favorite franchises. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are bringing back The Mummy, scheduled for May 19, 2028. Universal has reserved the date, and there are no other movies scheduled for that date.

The directors—Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett—who will revive this franchise are known for knowing what they’re doing, as they’ve done it before with other’90s franchises. They already did it with the successful return of Scream, after directing the acclaimed fifth and sixth installments of the slasher saga, keeping the scares, humor, and satirical elements intact. Now they’re working on doing the same with The Mummy, the beloved 1999 film that combined Indiana Jones-style adventure and humor with genuine scares.

The Mummy, which grossed over $422.5 million, launched a franchise that was one of Universal’s big and reliable titles in the early 2000s and made Fraser into a leading man and A-lister. There was also a prequel — The Scorpion King, featuring an early performance by Dwayne Johnson — and an animated series, not to mention a popular ride at Universal Studios Hollywood. And if you include the 2017 Tom Cruise reboot, has grossed over $1.8 billion worldwide. Sean Daniel, William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein will produce.
