R.J. Mitte, Walter White’s Son on ‘Breaking Bad,’ Dies at 34: His Final Instagram Post

RJ Mitte dead

The entertainment industry is mourning the loss of R.J. Mitte, the actor best known for portraying Walter “Flynn” White Jr. on the acclaimed television series Breaking Bad. The 34-year-old Breaking Bad star died by suicide on Monday, Oct. 12, his representative Sean Reilly, told USA Today. “Sadly, we can confirm that this is the cause of his death,” Reilly said in an emailed statement.

His last Instagram post was just five days ago. He posted an interview he did with The Joe Vulpis Podcast, where he talks about Breaking Bad and that there was “more to be told” about what happened to the White Family after Walter’s death. “I don’t think that was the end for Skyler or Walt Jr or Holly’s journey….the fans control what continues to be made”. He also mentioned how he set the bar too high as a young man debuting as an actor in Breaking Bad, which was recently named the No. 1 Television Show of the 21st Century.

After his death, a lot of his followers went to his social media to call out those that have been leaving negative and hurtful comments on his social media. “R.J. was liking comments (e.g. one about a Huel spin off) as late as yesterday and today. He saw all the ridiculous hate comments,” a follower wrote on his Instagram. “What a kind, impressive, GOOD person who had to read utter crap. Did anyone even listen to what he said in the clip at the end? How he set such a high bar for himself as a young man? What a brilliant person who deserved all the content in the world. May all the ridiculous, inane troll commenters weigh heavy with this on them. And I hope RJ now knows somehow how loved he was and is by the silent majority of all fans.”

A Love Story That Began With Friendship

One of the most heartbreaking aspects of Mitte’s passing is that he had been planning a future with his fiancé, Kennedy Suarez.

The couple had known each other for more than a decade before their friendship developed into a romantic relationship. After approximately five years as a couple, Mitte proposed to Suarez on October 10, 2025, on her 30th birthday, during a fundraising event in California benefiting United Cerebral Palsy.

He was an advocate

For fans, colleagues, and viewers who connected with his work, the news has prompted reflection on an actor whose career helped challenge Hollywood’s traditional ideas about disability and representation.

Mitte was more than a familiar face on television. He became an advocate for greater inclusion in the entertainment industry, using his public platform to highlight the importance of authentic representation and opportunities for performers with disabilities.

A Role That Won the Hearts of Millions

For millions of viewers, Mitte will always be associated with Flynn White, the son of Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston, in Breaking Bad.

Across the series’ five reasons, Flynn provided a deeply human perspective in a story filled with crime, family secrets, and devastating choices. As his father became increasingly entangled in the criminal world, Flynn struggled to understand the changes unfolding around him while trying to hold on to his own values.

Mitte also brought a personal dimension to the role. He has cerebral palsy, a condition he shares with his character, and his work helped bring greater visibility to performers with disabilities in mainstream entertainment.

His career demonstrated that disability does not define the limits of an actor’s talent or the complexity of the stories they can tell.

Bryan Cranston dedicated a beautiful post to his son on Breaking Bad

Bryan Cranston, who played Walter White in Breaking Bad, wrote the following message after learning RJ Mitte died by suicide. “I’m in deep despair as I write this tonight. RJ Mitte, my sweet son on Breaking Bad has died.
I met him when he was only 14 years old when he was cast as Walter White Jr., a part he played with such joy and enthusiasm.
Born with Cerebral Palsy, he never – ever – allowed that challenge to be an excuse for anything. He met the demanding shooting schedule head on with great determination.
Always listening to the advice that his TV parents (Anna Gunn and myself) gave him – but being a teenager, sometimes mischievously ignoring the counsel in order to learn the hard way… He was one of the stars of a hit TV show – but still a kid.
That kid was pretty raw when we started shooting the pilot in February of 2007, but little by little we watched him grow into a really fine actor. He parlayed his experience on the show to be a vocal advocate for performers with disabilities, and was the head of a philanthropic organization with a focus on helping the disabled community.
All that promise and potential now is such a loss.
It is especially devastating to hear that he took his own life.
Why?
We were texting each other just a few weeks ago – figuring out when we could meet for lunch. I don’t know if that lunch would have changed his future…
But I do know that I loved him, and thoroughly enjoyed being with him throughout the years on the series, and after the spotlight on Breaking Bad dimmed…
I’ll miss you, son.

I can’t stop there without imploring anyone who is contemplating suicide to please call for the support you need at 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (https://988lifeline.org/). There is hope”.
