Willie Colón, the iconic trombonist, composer, and performer of salsa classics like “El Gran Varón” and “Gitana,” passed away this Saturday at the age of 75 due to health complications, as confirmed by his family in a post on his official Facebook page. “It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and renowned musician, Willie Colón. He departed peacefully this morning, surrounded by his beloved family,” the post reads.
Colón died in New York, his manager confirmed the news to the media. “Our family is deeply grateful for your prayers and support during this time of mourning. We kindly request privacy as we navigate our grief,” added the statement issued by the family of William Anthony Colón Román, the singer of “El Gran Varón,” who was born on April 28, 1950, in the Bronx, New York.
The musician of Puerto Rican descent was also a poet, composer, arranger, performer, folklorist, producer, and musical director.
Fania Records said in a statement: “Today we bow our heads as the world mourns the loss of one of the greatest artists of our time – the incomparable Willie Colón: legendary trombonist, visionary composer, master arranger, emotive singer, bold producer, fearless director and tireless innovator.
“We are heartbroken by the passing of an icon whose sound transcended the dancefloor and defined an era. A pillar of Fania Records, Willie helped bring Latin music from the streets of New York to audiences around the world.

Willie Colón is survived by his wife Julia Colón, whom he married in 1991. They had four children: William D. Colón, Alejandro Liberty Colón, Adam Diego Colón, and Patrick Colón.
