Spider-Man: Brand New Day Trailer Reveals Multiple Villains

Sony and Marvel released the first official trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Tom Holland’s Peter Parker is back in action, and with his return comes a whole lot of villains.

Brand New Day picks up in the wake of No Way Home, when Peter had to make the difficult decision to save the world with the consequence that no one would remember him. In the new trailer you see Peter Parker going thru awkward encounters with his once-girlfriend MJ (Zendaya) and best friend Ned, who are now freshmen at MIT. It also seems that MJ may have a close relationship with a new character.

Besides having to witness a close encounter between MJ and a new guy, Peter’s DNA may be mutating. In the brand new trailer, an unseen Keith David explains how spiders have three life cycles. This is a vulnerable time for Peter, and his DNA may be mutating, which Dr. Banner tells him that it would be very dangerous. “Spiders have three life cycles. When between cycles, it can leave the spider vulnerable to threats. And for those spiders who make it through, it amounts to a kind of rebirth.”

Now, Peter Parker has to deal with not having MJ and Ned in his life and going thru a spider mutation. But that’s not all. Brand New Day brings multiple villains.

Peter has to deal with grumpy Frank Castle, a ninja gang, the Hand, and there appears to be someone, or something, jumping around from body to body. Plus, he is having problems with his powers. So, yeah. Peter Parker is having a whole lot of Brand New Problems.

Marvel Characters Return in Brand New Day

Several Marvel characters return — such as Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner, seemingly now teaching at a university, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, who still likes a big gun, and Michael Mando’s Scorpion, back from Holland’s first Spidey film, Homecoming.

Where is “Stranger Thing” Star Sadie Sink?

Since it was confirm that Sadie Sink was going to be in Brand New Day, we have many questions. Who is she? Is this a new love interest for Peter? Is she a villain? Both at the same time?

The new trailer doesn’t reveal much. For sure Sony and Marvel are saving the big reveal for the film itself. For now, we only have rumors. We know for sure that Sink won’t be playing Mary Jane Watson, since Zendaya is Michelle Jones-Watson.

Sink could be playing Gwen Stacy, the other great love of Peter’s life in most versions of the Spidey mythos. But will she have spider powers on her own. Another early rumor suggested that Sink is playing Shathra, a villain with deep ties to the greater Spider-Verse. Shathra is a wasp goddess who created the Great Nest, an energy force that exists in direct competition to the Web of Life and Destiny that empowers Spider-Man and his fellow Spider-heroes. This rumor Sadie Sink being Shathra could be a fake leak from Marvel to confuse leakers. Who knows.

Brand New Day is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a script by returning writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. It swings into theaters July 31.
